Man In The Middle: Paul Tierney

Man In The Middle: Paul Tierney
Paul Tierney is the referee for Watford's second Premier League game of the season, as they play on home soil for the first time this season, with Tony Pulis' West Bromwich Albion coming to Vicarage Road.

Tierney has only been a Premier League referee since last season, making his debut as Swansea City hosted the Hornets opponents West Brom at the Liberty Stadium in August 2014.

That was the last West Brom game that Tierney took charge of, and the man from Lancashire is no stranger to the Hornets.

Last season, Tierney took charge of three Watford games, and they all involved a player given an early bath.

First time around, he sent off Joel Ekstrand in last season's second game away to Norwich City, with him then sending off Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli at Craven Cottage in December.

The last Watford game he was in the middle of was when the Hornets travelled to The City Ground during the latter stages of the season, as he sent off Reds defender Kelvin Wilson, before the Golden Boys secured a 3-1 victory over Dougie Freedman's Nottingham Forest.

This will be the first League game for Tierney this season, with Portsmouth's underdog victory over Derby in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night being his only piece of action so far this season, which saw him only dish out one yellow card.

Last season, he took charge of thirty-seven games, and handed out a whopping one-hundred and thirty-seven yellow cards, along with eight red cards, including the three which involved Watford.
