The Vital Interview: Troy Deeney

The Vital Interview: Troy Deeney
IT's one of football's oldest adages that luck is as important within the game as any technical skills or God-given ability. In the case of Hornet's striker Troy Deeney, it's most certainly proved the case.

As our chat with the hulking frontman reveals, the Solihull-born hitman was not, as widely-circulated, part of the Aston Villa set-up as a youngster.

Instead the fierce Birmingham City supporter had the briefest of trials during which he failed to make much of an impression.

'[The] Case is when I went to Walsall and I came out of no-where, they said 'Have you ever been on trial anywhere?` I said, 'Yeah, I was at Villa youth.` I had four days and I turned up for one of them,' admits Deeney.

"[I didn`t turn up for the first three days because] I was 15 and chasing girls was lot more interesting. It was Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and they had already told us in advance so I turned up on the Monday.'

Having seemingly blown his big chance with a professional outfit, Deeney dropped into the non-league system, turning out for local outfit Chelmsley Town whilst studying to become a builder during the day.

Fate would hand Deeney his second crack at the big time during his time with Chelmsley.

"The guy who was scouting for them [Walsall] - Mick Halsall - was watching his son play against us. He only watched the game because the game he was meant to watch was called off because of the weather and I happened to score six I think. He was like 'Who`s this kid?` They told him I was 17 and he was like, 'Okay, can we have a look at him?` I went for one week and then ended up staying for five.'

Having run in 27 npower League One strikes in four years and 98 outings for Walsall, Deeney took another step-up as he joined Malky Mackay's Watford on the day of the 2010-11 season curtain-raiser, a trip to Norwich City.

As Deeney explains, it was far from ideal preparation:

"I did the medical and the signing and everything on the morning. That was all wrapped up by sort of one or two o`clock. Then I shot straight across to Norwich, met [fitness coach] Martyn Pert half-way, we didn`t really have much of a conversation because I was sort of 'What`s going on here` kind of thing and he was focused on the game.

"I got into the room at a quarter past four, Dale Bennett was there I think, then I met the lads on the bus. I didn`t know anyone`s name, I called John Eustace 'skip` because he was the skipper and I knew Danny Graham because that`s who I was going to go and play up front with."

But, if we've learned nothing else watching Troy's Watford career, the 24 year-old isn't fazed by adversity...

REMEMBER! This is just an extract from the interview. The full, feature-length Vital Interview will be in the Hornet's matchday programme for the visit from Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
