Assombalonga's Southend beaten in JPT final

Assombalonga's Southend beaten in JPT final
YOUNG striker Britt Assombalonga was powerless to prevent his loan club Southend United going down to Crewe Alexandra in Sunday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

Assombalonga started and played the full 90 minutes of the Football League Trophy as the Shrimpers were comfortably beaten by League One Alex.

Goals from Luke Murphy and Max Clayton did the damage as Phil Brown's side were denied the chance to win silverware.

In League One, Stephen McGinn was among the goals as Shrewsbury lost 2-1 at Yeovil Town.

McGinn grabbed a 21st minute leveller for the Shrews - his second goal for the club - before Yeovil went on to find a winner.

In the Championship, Craig Forsyth's Derby County were beaten 1-0 at home by Ipswich Town.

Forsyth played 90 minutes and was booked in a game in which Scott Loach saved a Rams' penalty.

Back in League One, Lee Hodson made his first appearance for Brentford since February, helping the Bees to a 1-1 draw at Coventry.

Hodson played 72 minutes before being replaced by on-loan forward Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Chris Iwelumo (Oldham Athletic), Steve Leo Beleck (Stevenage), Ross Jenkins (Barnet) & Piero Mingoia (Boreham Wood) were not involved with their respective clubs.
