The Vital Interview: Connor Smith

The Vital Interview: Connor Smith
IT'S BEEN a whirlwind few months for Connor Smith; signing his first pro' contract before Sean Dyche's departure, making his league debut at Crystal Palace, signing a five year deal and making his first pro' start at Blackburn Rovers.

With hindsight, the tall Irishman will have to re-asses his targets for the season having already achieved his big goal for the season.

"Now I`ve got my first start (at Blackburn last weekend), my aim is to keep older players who are really good quality out of the side.

"If you train well and play well, the manager has shown he`ll give you your chance - there`s not a lot more you could ask for as a young player."

Remembering his league debut against Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season, Smith was surprised to be brought on with the Hornets 2-1 down.

"I remember sitting on the bench; in my head I was thinking that maybe if we went a couple of goals up I`d get my chance. Being down and needing to get back I thought they`d bring on more experienced players," he reveals, with some candour.

"Coming on I was nervous, I thought 'there`s a lot of pressure here.` It`s not like going on when you`re ahead; you`ve got to do something to change the game. Abdi scored and Vydra scored…an unbelievable comeback."

Who said Watford weren't committed to youth anymore?!

REMEMBER! This is only an extract from Tuesday night's Official Matchday Programme. Make sure you pick up a copy to read the rest of the interview in which Connor reveals his remarkable rise from Sunday League to Football League!
