'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Reasons Phillips return would make sense

Watford are resigned to Danny Graham leaving. The fact that it's been 24 hours since Swansea bid 3m and it's not yet been rejected speaks volumes. With that in mind it's time to talk replacements and ex-'Orn Kevin Phillips seems ideal.

Having been released by Birmingham at the end of his contract, 37 year-old Phillips has a career strike record of 227 in 427 as well as a further 32 cup and play off strikes in 53 starts.

If that isn't a player worth seriously looking at then I don't know who is. The fact of the matter is Watford are skint and Phillips is in the twilight of his career looking for (probably) a last contract. He's made his money and now he's playing for the love of scoring goals - which he's particularly adept at.

One imagines he wouldn't be on ridiculous money if he returned and his experience adds something we don't have up top. Marvin Sordell, Troy Deeney and Gavin Massey are all young still and if Super Kev can't teach them the art of lingering in dangerous places before finishing perfectly then they're not up to much!

Furthermore, Phillips is a similar player to Danny Graham. He is sneaky; he gets into dangerous positions, feeds off scraps and most crucially poaches goals. The art of goal-poaching is one that meant Scott Fitzgerald carved out a professional career in football for a few years.

On top of all this he'd a good pro' who has looked after himself extremely well in order to have such a long career. That he was unhappy to be started so infrequently in his time with Brum says that he knows his own body and could take another season of knocks.

It all makes sense to me.

I understand that swansea s bid has been rebuffed. If they accepted that figure then the bidding stops! Can't argue you about Philips, he never had pace and to be fair is a better finisher than DG.

Doesn't want to move from his midlands home (near Lichfield) so club would have to accept him traveling.which given that he is 37 could adversely effect his form......I think it would be a gamble

Oooh. I didn't know that. Having recently read Paul Merson's book which said his commuting wrecked his back and subsequently his form I may have to re-think...
