Watford bolstered their striking options for the New Year with the capture of Swedish powerhouse Mathias Ranegie until 2017.

Twenty nine year-old Ranegie is a five-cap Swedish international striker, who has spent a large chunk of his career playing in the Swedish Allsvenskan.

Born in Gothenburg, the 6ft5in forward spent time with a local amaetur side, Masthuggets BK, before joining French amateurs Levallois SC for a year to be with his Guadeloupean father in Paris.

In 2005 Ranegie returned to Gothenburg to join Majorna BK before turning pro` with Division Two (League Two) side Larje Angereds IF where he notched 25 times in just 22 outings.

A move to Swedish giants IFK Gothenburg followed, but after one goal in 14 outings, Ranegie was loaned to Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles in 2008.

Injury curtailed Ranegie`s loan stint in the Netherlands, where he had scored once in five appearances.

An impressive return of 36 goals in 81 league outings for BK Hacken saw Ranegie move to giants FF Malmo for a significant fee halfway through the season.

Having landed the Allsvenskan top-scorer award after 21 goals from 27 outings, the Swedish international bagged another 10 in 19 appearances for Malmo in 2012 before a move to Udinese on August 31 2012.

Like Merkel, Ranegie has found game time hard to come by in Udine, making seven starts in all competitions in just under two years at the Stadio Friuli.

Ranegie has five Swedish caps, with three of those coming in friendly tours traditionally reserved for the best-performing players in the Allsvenskan. Another came in a World Cup 2014 qualifying win over the Faroe Islands.

In January 2010, Ranegie scored his first Sweden goal in an exhibition match against Syria - the same game in which Joel Ekstrand won his only Sweden cap.

Contracted until June 30 2017
