Things on and off the pitch at Watford Football Club are really starting to annoy me now. One thing that has always annoyed me, in the stands, is glory hunters or 'johnny-come-latelys`. Well there`s plenty of them packing Vicarage Road at the moment and to be selfish, I hope this slump continues, I hope they never come back and the club reverts to a hardcore support of 13 000 who sing their hearts out and jump for joy as we get a last-minute winner. I can`t remember the last time I jumped for joy when a goal went in. Obviously when we score, I am happy, but I`ll admit to having been more pleased when Chasetown scored this week against Port Vale than I`ve been when we`ve scored of late.
On the pitch, I think you`ve heard all my complaints before, Jordan Stewart, lack of pitch time for Ellington, Jordan Stewart, Aidy`s subs, the lack of a cutting edge, Jordan Stewart and oh, Jordan Stewart. On top of our evident lack of cutting edge, Stewart typified a poor performance all round. Bar Richard Lee who made two tremendous saves from Peter Halmosi`s devastating left-footed free kicks, few were deserving of a place in a Yellow shirt. Lionel Ainsworth was another to impress. He`s plied his trade in League Two for much of his short career, yet after just a few weeks at Vicarage Road, he`s finally gotten his chance and grabbed it with two gloved hands. By far and away man of the match, even after strangely being subbed at half-time.
No cutting edge other than Ainsworth who saw resolute defending prevent any of his crosses from being finished, although Tom Smith`s pinpoint cross met John-Joe O`Toole square on the head, landing just over Larrieu`s bar.
We`re relying on certain players at the moment, Lee for example nearly earnt us another point on top of that he got us at Stoke. Ainsworth, not yet relied on, but if he keeps up that form, he soon will be - the new Adam Johnson? Marlon King is another, he can`t do it all himself, as much as he wants to. Conflicting opinion from the Jamaican who apparently wants to leave due to pressure, but then puts as much on himself by expecting to play left back, central midfield, left midfield and up front all in one. King is crying out for someone to take the pressure of his shoulders. Darius anyone? Suspended today, but why was he not involved against Stoke or Colchester?
On a positive note, Damien Francis came on in the second half and looked lively. His passing was much improved from the dross he showed last season and that served up by Lee Williamson - not Rotherham reject, just a reject on this form.
Ellington, recent entrant to the `84 club` [brought on with 6 minutes to go every week] got more than his average run out and looked good for it. No miscued shots to talk of this week, but he looked more willing than he has done so far, perhaps 3.5 million isn`t completely lost on him. Lets pray he doesn`t grow that beard until he scores though.
Ending as the report started, the Johnny`s got their way, Gavin Mahon has been unceremoniously removed from his role as captain and told he can leave in January. No word from the club until today, despite his exile having lasted for a fortnight previously. Another pet hate of the club I promise I do love [!].
If your blood isn`t yet boiling, then you`re a Johnny, and good riddance to you.
The goal, out of interest, was made by Barry Hayles, 3877849 years old but still afforded the room to pick out the far post run of David Norris who slid in to notch with minutes to go.
