Watford 1 - Burnley 3

Burnley take the points from Vicarage Road

Watford lost their first home game in the league for nearly four months today with a disapointing and unfortunate defeat to Burnley.

The Hornets reshuffled their defensive pack with Dale Bennett replacing the injured Lloyd Doyley. Watford started very quickly with Danny Drinkwater being put in the clear after just 17 seconds but the Manchester Utd loanee dragged his shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

And it was Bennett who was in the thick of it as Burnley took the lead after 8 minutes with a bizarre goal. Following a long ball from Burnley a mix up between Bennett and Scott Loach saw Bennett inadvertently block Loach's attempted clearance on the edge of the box and watched in horror as the ball rebounded into the empty net.

Watford, however, responded quickly and when Marvin Sordell outmusceled Michael Duff in the Burnley half he crossed to the near post where Danny Graham volleyed home.

Both sides continued to look dangerous and Jay Rodriguez pulled a shot just wide for Burnley and Lee Grant saved superbly from Marvin Sordell after the Hornets striker was put in the clear.

Half Time: 1-1

Second Half

Having scored bizarre own goal of the season after just 8 minutes things did not get any better for Dale Bennett when he was substituted at half time with Adam Thompson replacing him.

Burnley were fortunate not to be reduced to ten men early into the second half. Danny Fox ploughed into Will Buckley on the half way line with his feet high but referee Tony Bates produced just a yellow card.

It was Burnley who took the lead mid way through the second half. Good build up play from the Burnley midfield saw Chris Iwelumo turn the ball round the corner for Chris Eagles to run onto and slot home after shrugging off Lee Hodson.

Despite Watford continuing to press Burnley hit the Hornets on the break again to secure a two goal lead. Chris Eagles broke down the right and got to the edge of the Watford box before crossing deep for Iwelumo to head past Scott Loach.

Watford continued to press and Lee Grant made another superb save this time from substitute Andreas Weimann's volley to secure the three points for Burnley.

Star Player

Adrian Mariappa - Dealt very well with Chris Eagles on the left in the first half before being switched back to centre back in the second half.

The tackle by Danny Fox on Will Buckley was disgraceful - a definite red card. Then today (Sunday) how interesting to hear Clarke Carlisle commenting on Radoslaw Majewski's dismissal for a nasty tackle, saying that these type of dangerous tackles must be stamped out of the game. But referee Tony Bates was weak along with his assistant who was very close to the tackle. I was waiting for Malky's comments on 3Counties after the game but apparently he was still in the dressing room at 6pm ! MM has been bemoaning various teams treatment of Will B for weeks now and it looks like he is being targeted after his brilliant performance against Cardiff. What a good performance by Adam Thompson; huge promise there. Well done Adam.
