Watford ran riot live on Sky on Friday night, crushing Brian Laws hapless Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 in their seasonal television debut. Under the floodlights of Vicarage Road, the Owls proved they are certainly not nocturnal creatures.
The Hornet's were well on top by half time having run in two goals within the first half an hour. After twenty one minutes, stand-in skipper Aidy Mariappa popped up in the area unmarked to turn home John Eustace's low cross.
The second was an absolute gem and will no doubt feature in the Hornets 'Goal of the Season' competition at the end of the season. Loanees Henri Lansbury and Tom Cleverley were pivotal to the move which saw a one two on the edge of the area before Lansbury shimmied his way through two Wednesday defenders to cheekily slot home at the near post.
However, Wednesday got exactly what they needed just seconds before half time as former Derby striker Marcus Tudgay nodded home. It was a sloppy goal for the Golden Boys to concede as a long throw from full back Tommy Spurr was allowed to lob the ball onto the head of Tudgay unapposed from a throw-in.
Half-time: 2-1
Watford got off to the perfect start in the second half as just nine minutes in, little Jon 'Arley grabbed Watford's third. From a cleverly worked short-corner, Henri Lansbury grabbed himself an assist, sliding the ball onto Harley's left peg for the diminutive midfielder to smash into the top right-hand corner of Lee Grant's net.
And, just seven minutes later it was four for the Hornet's as Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverley worked an impossible route into the Wednesday penalty area before pulling back from Henri Lansbury to grab his second of the night. No doubt Monsuir Wengar will pop his head over the fence at London Colney to congratulate his young star on Monday!
The end of a productive week as the Hornet's grabbed seven points out of a possible nine in a week that saw a superb 1-0 win up at promotion chasing Middlesbrough, a late, late leveller at winless Ipswich and a champagne performance saved for last with this trashing. Finally, just a week after Braveheart Malky challenged both the Duke and King Henri to start turning their chances into goals, both did exactly that!
Full-time: 4-1
