Winless Septemer Ends

3 - 2

Turf Moor

30.09.08 @19.45

Attendance: 10 033

Promised an Indian Summer by the weather people, Watford have found themselves with the complete opposite, an awful Autumn. September passed without league victory for the Hornets last night who collected just one point from 15 this month.

Owen Coyle still holds the Indian sign over Aidy Boothroyd too having now taken 7 points of the nine on offer between the two managers. Armed with two ex-Hornets, Coyle`s men were resilient and overcome Watford pressure to win the game in the second half.

Watford took the early lead, just five minutes gone and Will Hoskins took the ball on, and on, and perhaps further than he meant to before poking neatly through the open legs ok 'keeper Brian Jensen to give Watford a surprise lead. The Hornet`s are still yet to win on the road, so an early lead was just what the doctor ordered.

Or was it? Despite Hoskins having a second chance in quick succession which earnt Watford a corner, the Clarets levelled in the 29th minute when Leigh Bromby stupidly handled and cross from Wade Elliot. Former Hatter Graham Alexander duly converted to continue his scoring streak.

Burnley had been on top too, with Chris McCann cracking one towards Richard Lee`s goal and just wide of the post before Joey Gudjonsson smashed one in for Richard Lee to fumble but gather in the end.

Burnley were beginning to show more as the half continued, but in that inexplicable way that goals come, Watford took the lead seconds into injury time, Will Hoskins it was again, this time the former Rotherham man connected with Lee Williamson`s low cross to slide the Hornets ahead at the break.

Half Time 1-2

Watford`s joy was not to be long-lived however as just a minute after the re-start, it was all level. A good ball in to the feet of Martin Paterson saw the former Scunny hitman turn Bromby and fire home with ease.

Burnley now buoyant, saw Clarke Carlisle`s header tipped over by Richard Lee before taking the lead.

Diminutive winger Wade Elliot the man allowed to head past Richard Lee with ease after a cross had looped over the head of Aidy Mariappa.

Will Hoskins had the chance to wrap up a hattrick with eighteen minutes to go, and arguably the easiest chance he`d had all night yet he nodded wide from a Lee Williamson corner when all that was needed was direction.

Full Time 3-2

Lee; Mariappa, Bromby, Ward, Sadler; Eustace; Williamson, O`Toole, Harley; Smith and Hoskins.

Wasn't there but the reports I've seen have been somewhat different to the above, still I suppose it hasn't exactly been a barrel of laughs being a "claret4life". Just think; they scrape a win by the odd goal in 5, move up to 4th in the league but are still bittter and twisted. How sad, just think what they'll be like when they start dropping down the league. Come On You Golden Boys!
