Watford`s enigmatic gaffer Aidy Boothroyd has admitted that he "went overboard and bought too many in" in last January`s transfer window and insists he`ll learn his lesson and keep a cool head this time round.
Boothroyd pulled in staggering 8 new recruits - many of them complete unknowns - for the doomed fight against relegation from the Premiership 12 months ago BUT only midfielder Lee Williamson - a journeyman midfielder from Millmoor - has held down a regular place in the Hornets side since.
Strikers Moses Ashikodi (Rangers) and Will Hoskins (Rotherham) have both been packed off on loan to lower league sides during the past year despite the latter [ex Celtic target Hoskins] costing Watford just over £1m.
Last gasp purchases of Cedric Avinel and Rinaldi have not paid off with both turning out for the odd reserve game whilst another last minute signing Johan Cavalli (Istres FC) had his contract cancelled just 6 month into an 18 month deal.
Then there was midfield dynamo, Gareth Williams, who has been on the treatment tables more than pitch at Vicarage Road since signing on the dotted line from Leicester.
Even Steve Kabba, who for many Watford fans had all the attributes to be a success in the Championship, has found himself out in the wilderness (or out of place on the left wing on the odd occasion he has got a runout) since his £500K move from Sheffield United.
But Aidy insists he will not make the same mistakes when dealing to strengthen his promotion chasing side. He said "This time of year it`s a time for coolness. We do need to add a bit of depth but we won't be going mad".
And it seems Boothroyd is standing by his word with it being all very quite on the transfer front so far at WD18.
