Hornets 'ghana' be without Shittu!
Watford are set to lose man mountain centre half Danny Shittu for 7 crucial games in the New Year when the Nigerian African Nations Cup squad gets announced early next week.
Despite being left out cold in the international wilderness for 2 years, the Lagos born Hornets defender has featured in all of Berti Vogts' 2007 squads, including ANC qualifiers against Uganda, Lesotho and Niger, since the head coach took over in March and is tipped to play a major part in the tournament that kicks off in Ghana on January 20th.
And with the Super Eagles gaffer insisting that all his European based squad members "meet up on time [2 weeks ahead of the tournament kick off] without exception", it could mean the Glory Hornet boys will be without the rock steady defender for up to 6 weeks!
That all means that should Shittu be named in Nigeria`s 23 man squad as heavily tipped (he is rumoured to be the man Vogts wants to pair up with with Everton`s Joseph Yobo), he will miss critical league games against promotion contenders, Wolves, Sheffield Utd, Ipswich and a double header against Charlton as well as games against Leicester and Preston.
Shittu has started all of Watford`s games so far this season and his partnership with 'American Superpower` Jay DeMerit is the backbone to the league leaders side.
Just who can step up to the plate and step into his massive size 13 boots is yet to be seen!
Here at VitalWatford then we'll be wearing our Mali shirt with pride and waving our Ivory Coast scarf with passion during the group stages in the vein hope that the Super Eagles drop points and Shittu returns safe and sound...EARLY!
