New Deal for Jay

Jay DeMerit has ended the constant speculation surrounding his future by signing a new deal at Vicarage Road. The U.S international's current deal expires in 2009, but he has today added a further year to his time in Hertfordshire.

DeMerit was a huge success in the Premiership last year and several clubs, Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Bolton were all believed to be after his services.

Signed after a successful trial spell in 2004, DeMerit has made eighty-two league starts in his three years with the club.

On signing his new deal, DeMerit's club boss, Aidy Boothroyd, had this to say: 'From European backpacker to international footballer, a future captain of club and country. I'm delighted to secured for the future because as I've said before, I want to keep our crown jewels.'

Mr Bodell says:
'A great peice of business for the club. DeMerit is our most consisent centre back and with the Premiership club's chasing his signature, a sign of his intentions and commitment to the club.'
