The future is Claret for Clarke

The future is Claret for Clarke

Just under a week after declaring he will not let anyone else leave the club, Aidy Boothroyd has allowed Clarke Carlisle has joined Burnley for 250k.

Clarke joined Watford in 2005 from Leeds United for a minimal sum of 100k. Since then the Preston-born centre back has made 38 starts for Watford. This total was restricted by a long-term injury. Carlisle did manage to make a handful of Premiership starts after injury and also feature in the F.A Cup Semi-Final versus Manchester United.

The sale comes after Wayne Thomas joined cash-strapped Southampton for 1.2 million earlier today. Carlisle had been linked with a move to Turf Moor or Plymouth but the speculation cooled.

Mr Bodell says: 'I hope I speak for everyone when I say Clarke will be sorely missed at Vicarage Road. It is my belief that Carlisle is the most reliable, cultured centre half to have played for the Hornets since Marcus Gayle and I personally will miss his calming influence at the back.'
