A Watford perspective - Southampton 0 Watford 2

A Watford perspective - Southampton 0 Watford 2

First things first. Anyone who has read my previous articles will know what this transfer deadline move will mean to me. LET`S CELEBRATE NORDIN AMRABAT HAS LEFT!!! Ok now back to business.

With both teams unbeaten in the league up until Saturday`s game at St Mary`s stadium there was an air of confidence around the Watford fans leading up to this game. 2 draws and a win doesn`t sound like much but for a team who finished 17th last season it was a fantastic start by all accounts.

Southampton also changing manager at the end of last season had been expected to play a more fluid and attractive style of football under their new boss Mauricio Pellegrino than his predecessor Claude Puel. It is safe to say that the Southampton fans did not see that on Saturday.

With a lacklustre display from the saints who only could muster one shot on target and only really a spell of 5 minutes in the first half where they looked threatening. It was easy to see Watford were on top for most of the game. The key battle was in the centre of the park with Steven Davis and Oriol Romeu being thoroughly outplayed by Nathaniel Chalobah and the ever impressive Abdoulaye Doucouré.

Doucoure opening the scoring on the 38th minute with sweetly struck half volley from outside the box hit the bottom corner showing an apparent weakness of Fraser Forster`s to get down to those kinds of shots quickly. A weakness that Darryl Janmaat saw from the bench, coming on to replace the injured Kiko Femenia, he got given enough time on the ball by the Southampton players to take an extra touch then exploit that weakness with a well-placed shot drilled home from 30 yards on the 66th minute.

With another win under their belt you can see the team`s belief in what Marco Silva is trying to do at the club. Even with the same old defensive injuries as last season we look much tougher to break down and look comfortable trying to play our way out of the back.

With Manchester City on the horizon for this Saturday I will be at Vicarage road with the bitter taste still in my mouth of the 5-0 thrashing we received on the closing day of last season. I am not going to go over board and say we are going to get to get revenge and win 5-0 because we are playing better this year. I am not deluded.

Watford 3 Man City 0.
