A Watford Perspective - Mazzarri

A Watford Perspective - Mazzarri

The fans and the players alike were calling for Walter Mazzarri`s head. Now it seems that the board agrees.

The team languishing down in 16th place seemed to be the catalyst for the Pozzo family to take action against the former Napoli boss. There had been some unrest in the Watford camp in the recent weeks with the team failing to secure a win since the 15th of April.

Following their win at Swansea, Watford saw themselves sitting pretty 10th in the table with the fabled 40 points to stay in the premier league. Last years exit of Quique Sánchez Flores at the end of his inaugural season, with 45 points and reaching the FA cup semi-final should have been a warning for Mazzarri.

After reaching the 40 point mark, the teams form went down a very steep hill. With tough games to end the season such as Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea and Manchester City. With these difficult games ahead the Italian head coach would have probably hoped to have accumulated more points by that point of the season, with the ever rotating managerial door at Vicarage Road looming.

The manager never seemed to settle into the premier league, with a language barrier (as long and high as the Great Wall of China) giving him constant problems. Which was fairly evident if you saw the look on Daryl Janmaat`s face at Watford`s loss at Chelsea, with Mazzarri screaming at him from the side line the wingback obviously did not have the foggiest what he was saying.

Is it fair to say Mazzarri had a bad season? Some people may look at the age and quality of the Watford squad and say staying in the premier league was an achievement. Did the amount of injuries sustained throughout the squad especially in defence hamper his chance?

All in all Watford secured premier league status for another season, it wasn`t pretty but we did it. With the ambition of the owners still clear to push the club further up the table will we see an appointment that can achieve this? The right players coming in? We can only hope.

Highlights of Mazzarri`s season:
Watford 3 Manchester United 1
Watford 3 Everton 2

Low points of Mazzarri`s season:
Liverpool 6 Watford 1
Hull City 2 Watford 0
