Mazzarri Proud Despite Chelsea Loss

Head coach Walter Mazzarri has said he was proud of the Watford side for their efforts in Monday evenings loss to Chelsea.

Making the trip to Stamford Bridge to face this year's Premier League Champions, Watford pushed hard in the four three defeat but just came up short on the day.

Goals from Etienne Capoue, Daryl Janmaat and Stefano Okaka almost saw us take a point from the game but Cesc Fabregas scored their winner in the 88th minute after we'd come from behind twice.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, a proud Mazzarri explained.

'I am very proud of my team. We had four starting XI defenders out injured, but with all this we still did well. We played very well and we are using these games to assess for next year. There were some positives and some not so, but it was a good game and we are still evaluating for next season.'

Poised at three all going into the final quarter of an hour, Mazzarri felt on another day a slice of luck may have turned the match in our favour as it came to a close.

'When a manager loses a game like this they say he`s unlucky. There were two fouls in the build-up to the winner on Cleverley and Capoue which penalised us. We were also unfortunate as we could have scored with Behrami and Janmaat before then. I felt in this moment we could have won the game, but these episodes made us lose it.'

It does mean however that Premier League safety is now secured for Watford with it being confirmed that Hull City would drop back to the Championship next year and he was obviously pleased to have secured three straight top flight years as we go into 2017/18.

'The most positive thing is that we had 40 points with six games remaining and many injuries. We have four defenders injured and we still played how we did today.'
