Mazzarri Gutted After Palace Loss

Mazzarri Gutted After Palace Loss

Head coach Walter Mazzarri was left disappointed in the weekend defeat to Crystal Palace.

Heading to Selhurst Park for the game, our hosts didn't register a single effort on target in the game but took all three points from a second half Troy Deeney own goal and describing it as a 'balanced game' Mazzarri felt the least we had deserved to take was a point, if not all three ourselves.

Speaking to the Official Site in his post game press conference, our Italian gaffer believed that it was simply misfortune that had cost us something from the trip.

'The goal was an own goal and we didn`t deserve to lose. It was a very balanced game and it should have been 0-0, so it`s disappointing to lose like that. We defended well and the only chance they had was an own goal, and at that moment we had 10 men so had to defend the free-kick with one player less.'

Having described it as a 'balanced game' and said we were worthy of the '0-0' at least, Mazzarri did go on to say that in terms of our attacking play on the day, that needed improvement in the coming weeks as we weren't sharp enough.

'We should have played better on the wings. We didn`t risk enough in one-against-ones. In the end we played 4-2-4 and I`m not sure we could have done much more. Let`s not forget the team that started today was the same that beat Arsenal and scored two goals. In this moment we have to think game-by-game. We have to look at the table but I`m not worried about where we are.'

With 2,803 fans making the trip to south London for the game, Mazzarri ended by praising them for their efforts and he called on the team to take victory in the next one to make up for this disappointment.

'The supporters have been incredible and I am mainly disappointed for them. We look forward to the next game and dedicating a win to them.'

Sky Sports also have Mazzarri talking about not being overly concerned with the Premier League table at this moment in time.

'I am not too concerned about the table. At the moment we are not in too dangerous a position, but I am just disappointed we managed to throw away a point. We should have four or five more points this season.'

He also said that Deeney's overall performance on the day meant that for him, he didn't have to apologise for the error.

'It's an own goal; this can happen. He shouldn't apologise for this. I don't think he's happy, but it was an unlucky day: he ran and gave everything for the team so he shouldn't apologise, it was unlucky.'
