Amrabat's Watford Doubts

Amrabat's Watford Doubts

Nordin Amrabat's return to fitness from injury continues and it was expected he would return to full group training before the weekend, but the player himself has admitted to having doubts that he'd ever really get himself going at Watford in the Premier League this season.

He did in fact return to full training yesterday which was a boost.

Speaking to the Official Site as he nears a first team return following his injury, it has been a breakthrough season for the Moroccan international winger, and he can't wait to get going again now as the season draws to a close.

Reflecting on his time on the fringes of the squad over pre season, he admitted he thought he might have to move on with the summer signings the club made.

'When you calculate there are only 17 places for foreign players, the new players for sure would be in the squad. There were five or six question marks and I was one of them. That's the truth. I didn't play a lot in pre-season and I could feel the signals. I wasn't playing a lot and I wasn't stupid. It looked like it was going to be difficult for me to stay. There were lots of clubs from Spain who wanted to take me on loan and the club was ready to send me on loan, but the coach told me, in the end, he wanted me to stay.'

With Amrabat now a key part of the squad prior to his injury, he went on to say that he wasn't sure he would be in Walter Mazzarri's plans until his squad selection for Southampton on the opening day was known.

'I played well against Queens Park Rangers in pre-season but I played zero minutes against Lorient in the last pre-season game. Normally players who start the first game of the season play in the last pre-season game but I didn't play. I tell the truth, after the game I went to the coach to speak about my future. I said it was time for me to go - not from my side, but from the club's side. He told me I was going to play the first game against Southampton. I thought he was joking, but it was true. That week I worked really hard in training and I started at Southampton. From that moment I was playing.'

Improving and performing well ahead of his ankle ligament injury, Amrabat promised the fans still haven't seen what he's really capable of and he's hopeful he can show that before the end of the campaign.

'I've still not shown the Watford fans what I am really capable of. I can still do more. I played better when I was in Spain and for a period at Galatasaray. Last year it was difficult to show my best as I only played the last ten minutes of games.'

Adding.

'My best position is a winger and I prefer the left wing as I can go inside or outside but I've also played as right wing-back and then a few games as right winger. I can give a lot of energy to the team. I'm looking forward to being back.'
