Gianfranco Zola said he was disappointed with both the result and the performance against Blackburn, suggesting that the performance was a 'consequence of there being too many games'.
Watford have been action for the last three Tuesday evenings, playing six matches in just 18 days thanks to their League Cup commitments.
A Jordan Rhodes goal in the second half was enough to condemn Watford to defeat - just their second in the Championship this season - replicating last season's score at Ewood Park in the process.
Speaking to The Watford Observer afterwards, Zola said that the heavy schedule had been a factor.
"I knew it wouldn`t be a great game of football today because it is the sixth game in 18 days so I wasn`t expecting great quality.'
The Italian continued: "I think a lot is a consequence of there being too many games and you can`t always play with the same quality."
Zola reserved praise for substitute Diego Fabbrini who look bright after coming on: "I have to say that when Diego comes on he is very effective. I was expecting maybe Fernando Forestieri and also Josh McEachran to have the same impact and be as good as Diego.'
Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer hopes that the win will prove to his side that they can compete against those aiming to win promotion from the Championship.
Speaking to Rovers' official site, Bowyer said: 'Watford nearly got promoted last season and in my opinion will be there or thereabouts.
'Hopefully now it will give us the belief that we can compete against the so-called bigger teams.
Bowyer continued: 'When you get to half-time and you are 0-0 against the league's top goalscorers it gave the boys some belief and I think they grew in confidence.
'[Manuel] Almunia has made two very good saves from [Josh] King and Jordan [Rhodes], so we are delighted with how we have gone about it tonight.'
