Gianfranco Zola says Saturday's hard-fought win over Wigan Athletic was 'probably one of the toughest games' the Hornets have been involved in under him.
Substitute Cristian Battocchio stole all three points for the hosts, slotting home eight minutes from time on a frustrating afternoon.
Neither side excelled in what was a poor game at Vicarage Road, though Wigan did see the impressive Nick Powell have a goal disallowed for offside.
Speaking to The Watford Observer afterwards, Zola commented that his side has learnt from the disappointment against Norwich in midweek in closing out the win.
'We were comfortable. To be honest, Wigan made a big effort towards the ball (pressing) and they achieved their task but they were not posing a big threat coming forward,' stated the Italin.
"After the goal, we learned from the game we played with Norwich and everyone was tuned in and worked hard to defend the goal; it worked quite well."
Zola continued: "The game was completely flat. We were not creating enough and they were not creating enough.'
Speaking to Latics' Official Site Owen Coyle said he'd congratulated his side in spite of their defeat: "It`s not very often after defeat that you go into a dressing room and congratulate your players on their performance, but that was the first thing I did after the game.
"We played terrifically well and had superb support from the travelling fans, but the decisions from the referee have left us frustrated.'
The Scot continued by citing Powell's disallowed goal and a penalty shout for a Lloyd Doyley challenge on the Powell.
"Nick Powell had a perfectly good goal in the first half disallowed for an offside flag on James McClean, but at the time it was clear he was on and the replays support that claim.'
Coyle continued: "Then we have a stonewall penalty claim in the second half turned away when Nick is clearly fouled inside the area. You can know from Nick`s reaction that he`s been fouled and for the life of me I can`t see why it`s not been given.
