South Tyrol Representative XI 0-8 Watford

WATFORD stepped up their pre-season preparation with an 8-0 victory over a South Tyrol Representative XI, with Britt Assombalonga weighing in with a hat-trick.

The 20 year-old DR Congo-born striker bagged a treble whilst Sean Murray added a further two with Ikechi Anya, Marco Faraoni and Bernard Mensah all scoring.

Head Coach Gianfranco Zola included five new faces in his starting XI: Faraoni, Gabriele Angella, Reece Brown, Jaime Romero & Diego Fabbrini.

Troy Deeney and Fernando Forestieri started up top once more.

Faraoni headed Watford into a 25th minute lead when he nodded home a free-kick from Fabbrini.

Three second-half goals within five minutes of the re-start had Watford cruising, the first a Murray penalty, the second a powerful run and finish from Assombalonga and the third coming from first-year pro' Mensah.

Murray grabbed his second not long after, beating the host's 'keeper with a sweet strike before Anya fired home the sixth from Angella's pass.

International Man of Mystery/trialist, Marko Dmitrovic, entered the fray with 21 minutes to play replacing Jonathan Bond as he made his first appearance of pre-season.

With time running out Assombalonga completed his hat-trick in impressive fashion.

Watford:

First half:
Bond; Doyley, Angella, Brown (trialist); Faraoni, Battocchio, Hogg, Fabbrini, Romeo; Deeney, Forestieri.

Second half: Bond (trialist - Marco Dmitrovic 69); O`Nien, Brown (trialist) (Stewart 62), Byers; Anya, Smith, Angella (Ikpeazu 62), Murray, Pudil; Mensah, Assombalonga.

Watford have confirmed today via official channels that the final Italian pre-season friendly with OGC Nice has been cancelled, but new opposition will be sought.

The club have also confirmed that Almen Abdi, Joel Ekstrand, Lewis McGugan and Manuel Almunia have been left out of pre-season friendlies thus far due to niggles and fitness concerns only.
