Zola: 'Derby didn't deserve a draw'

Watford capped off an excellent week by moving into second thanks to a 2-1 victory over Derby County this afternoon.

Hornet's Head Coach Gianfranco Zola was eager to stress afterwards that the visiting side had made the tie a tricky proposition for his side, who eked out a professional win.

Rightly lauded for their flowing football for much of the season, Watford were far from the best at times, and secured the win thanks to their spirit and endeavour.

Matej Vydra put the Horns ahead 10 minutes before the break with his 20th of the season before Joel Ekstrand added the decisive second in the 68th minute.

Jamie Ward got Derby's consolation from the penalty spot after referee Mr Mark Haywood awarded a penalty for an offence during a corner.

Speaking to The Watford Observer, Zola praised Nigel Clough's side.

"Derby were so good at applying pressure on the ball, with a lot of players, and it was impossible to hold on to the ball for too long in that area. That is why today was a tough game,' admitted Zola.

The Italian continued:

"I don`t think Derby deserved a draw because whilst they played well, in the first half, even though we didn`t play well, we always created chances and also in the second half.'

Zola also applauded his side's work ethic in grinding out a crucial third win of the week:

"We need to add that side to our game because you cannot play fantasy football all the time. Sometimes you have to do the job in difficult circumstances and a little bit more is required.'

Watford are in action next Friday as they head to Molineux to take on struggling Wolves live on Sky Sports.
