Zola: 'We had to work hard because they were good'

Gianfranco Zola praised his side's efforts as they returned to winning ways at the expense of Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

Former Hornet Marvin Sordell had his new side ahead from the spot on his first return to Vicarage Road before Matej Vydra equalised four minutes later.

Almen Abdi got the Hornet's winner 20 minutes from time, a result which widens the gap between Watford in third and Derby County in 7th to 11 points.

Speaking afterwards to The Watford Observer, Zola said:

"It was a game where we had to work hard because they were good and we did that. Three games in a week is always hard for us as well. I was pleased and proud of the performance."

The Italian also singled out goal-scorer Vydra and all-action midfielder Cristian Battocchio for individual plaudits:

"Matej showed why so many teams are interested in him. It was another performance of quality, quantity and character. He was absolutely fantastic today,' enthused Zola.

"Cristian Battocchio and a few others were fantastic as well.'

Watford are back at the Vic' next Friday as they take on Crystal Palace who sit a point and a place below them in the npower Championship table.

What a difference a season makes. At 52 points last year, Sean Dyche was satisfied that we wouldn't be relegated! After 30 games this year, we have scored more than in 46 games last year and are getting everso slightly excited about poss promotion! And... we are playing the best football I have seen from a Hornets side in 50 years. Well done Zola & team. The Aidy Hoofroyd days are starting to fade and not before time.
Oldyella
Our much more aesthically-pleasing football is finally being recognised, in spite of the fact Mackay had us moving the ball around nicely and Boothroyd certainly tried to implement a more pass-and-move style of play during his final season (08/09) before being sacked. Thoroughly-enjoyable times nonetheless!
