Watford to appeal Vydra red card

Watford to appeal Vydra red card

Gianfranco Zola has announced that Watford will appeal the controversial red card given to striker Matej Vydra yesterday.

The 20 year-old forward was dismissed for what referee Steve Rushton intimated was a stamp on Middlesbrough's Nicky Bailey.

Bailey had made the initial challenge on Vydra and at first was under the impression that it had been he who had been sent-off.

'Boro boss Tony Mowbray was also convinced that it was his side who were being penalised.

In reality, the Czech forward merely jumped out the way of the challenge before trying to regain his footing. A lack of reaction from any Middlesbrough player should have been an indicator for Mr Rushton.

Speaking to watfordfc.com, Zola confirmed that the club will appeal the red card:

'We will appeal - of course we will appeal,' confirmed Zola.

'No one in the ground saw anything - apart from the referee. It was out of the blue wasn't it?

'I think you can tell a lot by players' reactions and not one person said anything or made any gesture.'
