Rams managing director Mike Horton has spoke of Derby`s decision to sell Tommy Smith to his former club Watford.
"All I can say right now is that Tommy Smith wanted to re-sign for Watford," Horton told the club`s official site.
"They are in the Premiership, they can afford to pay him more money and Billy Davies is only interested in players who are 100% committed to the Derby County cause."
"For whatever reason, we inherited a situation whereby Tommy had been allowed to get into the final season of his contract with us and our choice was stark: take the money today or nothing tomorrow. On that basis, we have done the best possible deal for this club," he continued.
"On a personal level, we wish Tommy well. He is a good professional, our current Player of the Year, the fans have really taken to him and we truly hope he enjoys success with Watford in the Premiership."
