Mariappa undergoing Reading medical

Reigning 'Player of the Season' Adrian Mariappa is set for a £2m switch to Premier League new boys, Reading.

The Hornet's vice-captain is understood to be undergoing a medical with the Berkshire club ahead a switch worth a basic fee of £2m plus clauses.

The 25 year-old defender has just 12 months remaining on his Watford contract, a fact which has forced the hand of the Hornet's hierarchy somewhat.

Harrow-born Mariappa has been subject of much speculation over the summer with Wigan Athletic also linked.

Speaking at Tuesday's press conference to introduce new Head Coach Gianfranco Zola, CEO Scott Duxbury confirmed that the only interest in the centre-half had come earlier in the summer from the Royals.

As soon as their is confirmation of the deal, Vital Watford will bring it to you.

For Gods Sake! £2m - is that all? When are we going to get value for money for our top players? Connor Wickham from Ipswich went for £8m. The last sale that was good value was Ashley Young.

Should hav said in the article that he has only 12 months left on his contract. We're pretty stuck to be honest!

Reading will struggle this season so he'll soon be playing in the Championship again...
