OFFICIAL: Graham Taylor steps down

Watford legend Graham Taylor has this afternoon stepped down from the club's board and his role as non-executive director.

The two-time manager's departure was announced this afternoon with immediate effect. Taylor will still retain his honorary life-president position.

GT returned to the club in January 2009 as a non-executive director before assuming the role of interim chairman in light of Jimmy and Vince Russo's departure.

The 67 year-old was never meant to remain in the role as long as he did, but with the off-field turmoil of the previous regime and the subsequent takeover by Laurence Bassini, Taylor never left the role.

In a statement on the Official Site, Taylor said:

It would have been wrong of me to have stepped down just before the start of the season, and to have left an unsettling vacuum at that time.

'I'm about to head off to the Euros as part of the BBC commentary team, and then away on private holidays.'

The most successful manager in the club's history by a long chalk, Taylor also sent a personal message to supporters which can be read by CLICKING HERE

Everyone at Vital Watford would like to thank you for everything you have done for this football club Graham and wish you the very best for the future.

My all time WFC hero departs once more, probably for the last time. Good luck Graham in everything you do, thank you for giving all WFC fans two fantastic spells and more recently a comfort blanket when things have been rocky. In you we have trusted our club and you have never let us down. Thank you so very much.
