Mackay denies Cowie rumors

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay has denied rumors that former Hornet Don Cowie did not sign a new deal with the club last summer because he knew his compatriot would be leaving WD18.

Scottish international Cowie left the club on a free transfer having failed to agree a new deal at Vicarage Road, despite a 'substantial' offer from the club.

The former Inverness midfielder then followed Mackay to the Welsh capital with his contract at Watford expired.

Speaking to Wales Online, Mackay was quick to quash the rumors however:

"There were some ridiculous suggestions from people that Don wasn`t re-signed by Watford when the time came to talk to him because I knew I was leaving.

"My goodness if only managers had that much of a crystal ball. People are seeing a conspiracy theory when it`s absolutely not there."

For my money, the real issue lay in the fact that the club failed to agree a new contract with a key player in the run-up to the expiry of his contract.

Watford can't afford to let their best players go for nothing, so with Cowie six months from freedom in January of this year, why did we not try to sell him?
