Watford sign Danny Shittu

Watford have completed the signing of QPR defender Danny Shittu for a fee of £1.6 million which could rise to £3million depending on appearances and further Watford success.

The Nigerian international had looked set to join Championship outfit West Brom after the Baggies had a bid of £1.5million accepted by the West Londoners. However, Watford`s improved offer of £1.6million secured the services of the much sought-after centre-half.

Watford supremo Aidy Boothroyd was quick to praise Rangers` Player of the Season for 2005/06, someone who he feels will fit into the Vicarage Road culture. "In Danny we're signing another player who fits the Watford way - hungry to learn, and eager to prove his worth at the very, very top level against the best," Aidy told the club`s official site.

"He is somebody that we have been chasing for some time and I'm pleased that he will now have the chance to fight for a place along with the other excellent centre-halves we have at the club."

The 25-year-old, who joins Premiership Watford on a three-year-deal, could make his Watford debut in the glamour friendly against Italian giants Inter Milan on Tuesday.

£3million seems a lot for an average Championship player

Well done on signing Danny. He was a great signing for the Pool, albeit as a loanee. And all the best in the Premiership this season.

I think the fee may rise to £3m. I'm not convinced but hopefully it will be another Aidy masterstroke
