Deeney: 'I'm not a winger'

Troy Deeney's Watford career has been particularly frustrating, compounded by his lack of striking chances.

The 23 year-old forward has been utilised as a right-winger/central midfielder for much of his time as a Hornet despite being signed as a forward.

Birmingham-born Deeney surpassed the 50-appearance mark for the club against Brighton yet he has made just 21 league starts scoring three goals.

Speaking to The Watford Observer, Deeney admitted his frustrations:

"Look at me, I am 6ft 1in and nearly 15 stone so there is no way I am a winger. I train all week as a striker unless I am told that I am playing on the wing at the weekend.

"I am scoring in training so I am not too fussed about anything else. If I am in and around it then I will get chances and score."

Deeney opened his account for the season playing wide against Hull City a fortnight ago but has since then been benched but returned to action in a left-wing role against Middlesbrough.

I agree entirely with the guy, he is not a winger.

Whether he is a forward of sufficient ability at this level or not also remains to be seen but he doesn't offer anything wide and I certainly feel his frustration as Chris Iwelumo, Craig Beattie and Joe Garner have all been added without him really getting a proper chance to prove his worth.
