Gavin Mahon extends contract

Watford skipper Gavin Mahon has signed a two-year extension to his contract to keep him at Vicarage Road until 2009.

The Birmingham-born midfielder, who was awarded Watford Player of the Season in 2004, has improved leaps and bounds since the arrival of Aidy Boothroyd and was quick to praise the Watford gaffer upon signing an extension to his current contract.

"Aidy has been brilliant for us," Mahon told the Stellar Group website. "The effect he had on the side has been well documented, and is another reason why I have so much to look forward to here."

Looking forward to life in the top flight of English football for the first time in his career the fans` favourite said: "We had an unbelievable season last year and the lads cannot wait to get started in The Premiership now. I am determined to enjoy the experience. But, as with any sport, you are only happy when you are winning and we will not be going out just to make up the numbers."

The 29-year-old added: "We have had a good start to pre-season and the anticipation is really building. Hopefully this will be a very exciting couple of years both for myself and the club."

Mahon, who was signed from Brentford for 150,000 in 2002, turned out to be the best signing of the ill-fated Gianluca Vialli era at Vicarage Road. The no-nonsense midfielder has made over 150 yellow-shirted appearances and skippered Watford to Championship play-off glory in May.
