Mackay hoping for budget boost

Hornet's boss Malky Mackay hopes that the summer departures of forgotten men Mat Sadler and Nathan Ellington will hand him a timely financial boost ahead of the transfer window.

The duo are expected to leave having both spent part of the season out on loan, Sadler with League Two flops Stockport County and Ellington with Saturday's opponents, Preston North End.

Both signed during the more affluent times of Graham Simpson and Mark Ashton, neither has featured this season and in the case of Sadler it's been two years since he pulled on a yellow jersey.

Speaking to BBC Sport Mackay said he would be sitting down with the board to discuss the allocation of the soon-to-be 'excess' funds:

'I'll discuss that over the coming weeks with the board, in terms of what the finances and expectations are next year,'.

'The budget for next year is something we're looking at but we have new owners in so weekly we'll have discussions right through the summer and I'm sure the picture will become clearer.'

The fact that the Hornet's have been prepared to pay the wages of two players who were clearly not going to be used suggests there may be hope for Mackay in securing the money to spend on first-team players for next season.

It would certainly be one way for Mr Bassini to make himself very popular, very quickly!
