Mariappa extends contract until 2013

Hornet's vice-captain Aidy Mariappa has this morning penned a new two-and-a-half year contract to stay at Vicarage Road.

The Harrow-born centre half has emerged as a key player this season alongside the experienced Martin Taylor at centre back and was previously out of contract until 2012.

Mariappa made his Hornets bow in the 2005 Carling Cup first round victory over Notts County at left-back.

The 24 year-old's breakthrough campaign was in 2006/2007 with the Hornets at the foot of the Premier League table. The then teenage defender was used at right-back by boss Aidy Boothroyd and continued there the majority of the time until last season.

It was only last season that Mariappa began to fill in more at centre-half where he had made his name as an academy player at the club. More often than not in the second-half of the season though Mariappa was utilised at right back with Jay DeMerit partnering Martin Taylor when fit.

Mariappa has now clocked up 183 appearances for the club and is currently on a streak of 113 consecutive league and cup starts.

A good player and extending the contract must mean that there is some stability for the future. Of course, money comes in to it, but Im sure the agent and aidy would be asking questions about the clubs future.

I imagine so. Nice to tie him to a contract as he must be considered one of our more saleable assets. Need to get Don Cowie on a new deal now.
