Watford sign Chris Powell

Watford sign Chris Powell

Watford have completed the signing of former England international defender Chris Powell from Charlton Athletic.

The 36-year-old, who represented England on five occasions after being selected in Sven Goran Eriksson`s first England squad in 2001, said that Watford manager Aidy Boothroyd played a pivotal role in his decision to sign for the Golden Boys.

"It was the manager who attracted me to Watford," Powell told the club`s official site. "I was extremely impressed with what he did last year and want to be part of what's he's looking to do for Watford in the future.

"I'm a great believer in going to places where you're wanted so I'm glad to add my Premier League experience to the squad and be part of a successful season at Vicarage Road."

The Lambeth-born defender has made 700 senior appearances during his time at Crystal Palace, Southend United, Derby County and Charlton Athletic, and boss Boothroyd was quick to point out that Powell will play a significant part on the pitch as well as helping with the development of younger players.

"We're bringing on board a guy who fits our culture and has the experience and know-how at the very top level," said Boothroyd. "His contribution on and off the pitch will be vital as we look to build the next phase of our plan."

Powell is currently chairman of the Professional Footballers` Association and signs for Watford on a one-year deal.
