Scunthorpe Preview - Away, Jan 3rd

Scunthorpe Preview - Away, Jan 3rd

FOR SOME reason unbeknown to anyone involved in football we play on virtually every bank holiday, irrespective of the fact games may have taken place on the Saturday.

And so, Malky Mackay's thin squad travel to Scunthorpe to take on the Iron's at Glanford Park this bank holiday Monday, assuming the pitch has thawed out!

After three impressive wins on the bounce Watford will be looking to brush aside the most inferior opposition they've come up against of late, though sods law would have it that we'd slip up against the Iron.

Focus is needed lads.

Sitting 22nd, the North Lincolnshire outfit are two points from safety at present, having been comprehensively beaten by Doncaster on Saturday.

Scunthorpe United Team News: Club record signing Rob Jones has had a leg injury of late so the Iron will assess the former Hibernian centre-half on the day whilst full back Niall Canavan has a knee problem.

Striker Freddie Sears recently returned to the other Iron's - West Ham, only in time to score on Saturday.

Line-up Vs. Doncaster Rovers: Murphy; A.Wright Byrne (c), Mirfin, Nolan; Woolford, O'Connor, Collins, Togwell; Forte and Dagnall.

Key Player: Joe Murphy - The ex-West Brom and Sunderland 'keeper has been with Ian Baraclough's side for four years now and is fast-closing in on 200 career starts.

A two-time Eire cap, Murphy started his career on the Wirall with Tranmere Rovers before being picked up by Premier League West Brom. Despite a numeber impressive yeards as No.1 at Glandford Park, Muprhy has as yet not been prised away but at just 29, his best years are still ahead of him.

Home Form: Scunthorpe Utd 1-4 Leeds, Scunthorpe Utd 2-4 Cardiff City and Scunthorpe Utd 0-2 Coventry City.

Head2Head Form: Watford 1-0 Scunthorpe Utd (FA Cup) 08/09, Watford 3-0 Scunthorpe Utd, Scunthorpe Utd 2-2 Watford 09/10, Watford 0-2 Scunthorpe Utd 10/11

Watford Team News: Lee Hodson and Troy Deeney both failed to recover in time for the Portsmouth game on Saturday whilst Michael Bryan and Stephen McGinn have ankle and cheekbone injuries.

Skipper John Eustace has a calf strain and could miss the Iron clash so Ross Jenkins or Josh Walker would fill in for the 31 year-old midfield talisman.

Andrew Taylor and Jordon Mutch make their last appearances before their loan spells end.

Likely Watford Line-up: Loach; Doyley, Mariappa (c), M.Taylor, A.Taylor; Jenkins; Buckley, Mutch, Cowie; Sordell and Graham.

Away Form: Burnley 3-2 Watford, Barnsley 0-0 Watford and QPR 1-3 Watford.
