DeMerit Moves to MLS

Former Golden Boy Jay DeMerit has been officially announced as a Vancouver Whitecap's player in the last week with the 2010 MLS season having finished.

The 30 year-old centre-half who joined the Golden Boys on a short-term deal way back in 2004 from local non-league outfit Northwood went on to make 182 league appearances for the Hornet's in a six year association.

However, after injury and a loss of form the USA international was released at the end of his contract to cut costs. He was expected to remain in Europe with Steve McClaren's Wolfsburg and Everton amongst his alleged suitors.

Having failed to pen a new deal following the World Cup in South Africa DeMerit will line up for the MLS' newest franchise next season having been announced as their first signing ahead of their debut season.

Speaking ahead of the move DeMerit said:

"I am very thankful for my experiences with Watford FC and look forward to this new opportunity in Vancouver.

"Whitecaps FC have a tremendous history and great support in this beautiful city. After spending several seasons in England, I felt it was the right time to return to North America and I have been impressed by the Whitecaps FC organization and the vision they have as a club. I am excited to make Vancouver my new home."
