Home grown Hornets get green light

Former Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd once quipped that the Hornets were "more of a microwave club" when it came to growing our own players

…and, after the Football League voted in a new 'Home Grown` rule for next season, the reassuring "ding" from that microwave might just start to fill the air in WD18 a bit more frequently!

At an AGM and Summer Conference in Malta (what`s wrong with Morecambe for goodness sake?), the Football League chairman gave the green light to new squad restrictions which come into play for the 2010-2011 season!

Clubs outside of the big time charlie top division MUST now have no more than 25 players over 21 in their 1st team squad AND 10 must be home grown through the Academy!!!

You can have as many players under 21 on your books - which is nice!

As Malky Mackay said at the back end of last season "It`s so important that our young players can see a path to the first team"… and this big thumbs up by the football league will ensure this…

Not that it will have too much impact on Malky Mackay`s Hornets. After all, Watford had a reliance on the whipper snappers from their Academy last season - 18 home grown players in their squad of 29!!!!

Good work chairman, wherever you may be…

Now, if we can just get the Big League to accept a similar proposal then we might see an end to this horrendous foreign invasion of payday chasers!
