'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Youngster Massey Turns Pro'

Watford`s revolutionary Harefield Academy system yesterday recognized it`s first graduate as local lad Gavin Massey penned a two-year professional contract with the Hornet`s which will tie the 17 year-old forward to the Hornet`s until 2012.

The nippy forward, who only made his first-team debut on the final day of the season during the mauling of Coventry City was amongst the first intake of scholars at the Harefield Academy back in 2007.

Having represented the club at both U18 and Reserve Team level previously, Massey also took part in the prestigious Milk Cup Youth Tournament for the past two seasons over in Northern Ireland.

Bigger clubs than the Hornet`s have been sniffing around the 6`1" forward, including five-times European Cup winners, Liverpool. Tying the Watford-born youngster to a professional contract offers the Hornet`s a lot more security if, should the former Chater School student meet the levels expected of him.

'Gavin has worked extremely hard and we feel he merits a pro deal, the hard work has to continue now.

It is a reward for his on-going progress, the hard work is still to come if he wants to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Adrian Mariappa and Lloyd Doyley, who have come through the Academy.'
Said Malky Mackay.

Massey will finish his education at the Harefield Academy whilst also being part of the senior squad next season.

Good luck Gavin.
