Saracens Chairman Nigel Wray has spoken out ahead of pre-season, stating his belief that the damage to the club`s Vicarage Road pitch is down to football being played there and not Rugby.
'Oddly enough in my view it is not rugby that damages the pitch but football. New blades for studs don't help but if you examine any football pitch which doubles as a rugby pitch then the worn marks on the field are strangely enough relevant to football not rugby.
The pitch is hardly conducive to the free-flowing football that Malky Mackay has preached at all costs and has been cited as a reason for Watford`s dip in form in 2010 by any number of football personalities, most recently including Newcastle United`s Championship Player of the Year, Kevin Nolan.
Wray is not the only person to suggest it`s actually Malky`s men who are damaging the pitch as apposed to his egg-chasing brigade however all that rolling, rucking and pushing one another about surely can`t help! The argument is that kicking is a very small part of Rugby and therefore the majority of the divots and cuts are down to footballers who, shock, horror, kick the football more often.
That is of course unless you`re a Neil Warnock side who tend to kick the opposition more than the ball!
Watford`s current agreement with Saracen`s can be cancelled next Summer if the two parties agree it this year.
