Malky: Defence naive but magnificent!

'Very frustrated" Watford boss Malky Malky dubbed the Hornets defending "naive" and "very soft" in the 3-1 defeat to Cardiff... then heaped praise on his "magnificent" defenders!?!

In his post-match summary on the 'fficial site, Mackay admitted that 2 of the 3 Cardiff goals could easily have been avoided by his backline - and as a former centre back with Norwich, Celtic and West Ham, you 'd expect him to know what he`s talking about.

Malky insisted "The second [goal] was very soft. Peter Whittingham isn`t renouned for his heading but he put the ball in the back of the net too easily".

And of Chris Burke`s 3rd - after he weaved his way down the full Hornets half of the pitch, shaking off Mariappa and Hodson - Mackay added "You don`t let someone run 50 yards and put the ball in the net. It was naive defending and it was heavily punished".

Naive defending indeed.

However, in a bizarre twist that leaves VitalWatford completely baffled, the Watford boss went on to pay tribute to defenders Adrian Mariappa and Martin Taylor for their performances at the Cardiff City Stadium!!!!!?!

Mackay stated "I feel sorry for my 2 centre backs [today] as they were both magnificent. They put a lot of effort in against 3 of the best forwards in the division."

Hmmm, maybe it was a thinly disguised way of saying that Lee Hodson had a stinker (which we admit he did for 2 of the goals)...

... but if Malky feels "naive" defending is worthy of such praise then no wonder he wants us to "tighten up" at Hillsborough!

Despite Mariappa being almost the shortest player on the pitch, he was outstanding. Have to say Hornets - you didn't deserve to lose 3-1. Better side in the first half, but useless in the 2nd

Thanks Bluebird... Whittingham's goal really seemed to knock the fight out of us to be honest - how that guy didn't beat Nolan to the League Award I have no idea!!!

Bluebirds points echo the radio commentary. I do see MT & AM as next season`s pairing but LH needs to improve his defending massively or we get a new lefty with Lloyd switching.
Dirk Thrust
I do kind of agree Dirk - Lloydy is a decent and solid full back on either side. My issue is why are we looking to ship Parkes out when he could do a job. This Travner guy clearly isn't the answer. I also think Dale Bennett could be worth a shout.
DrWatford
Parkes is too lighweight I think. Not seen travner.
Dirk Thrust
Yeah I agree with you Doc. The boy Bennett has done really well in his appearances this season. I rate Parkes from when I've seen him but he seems to have Hoskins sydrome of kicking around for ages without getting a chance. Travner has proved to be a massive waste of money thus far. Give Hodson time, he's done well but he's only 18. He will get better with experience.
