Self confessed Watford fan, Craig Mackail-Smith, saw a loan move to his boyhood club officially rebuffed by outspoken Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony when the Hornets came a calling with a view to taking him for the rest of this season.
The Posh have confirmed they "turned down offers from 3 Championship clubs to take [Mackail-Smith] on loan" with their POSH OFFICIAL SITE'admitting it was Watford - along with Leicester City and Reading - who wanted the striker with a hit-rate of 61 goals in 133 starts.
And it appears that it was only the intervention of the Posh top brass that stopped the former Dagenham striker from leaving London Road after Barry Fry told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire that "the manager`s got no problem with letting him go on loan".
Hertfordshire home grown Mackail-Smith started his career at St Albans and is rumoured to have family in and around WD18 so being whisked away to Watford with the lure of first team footie does seem plausible…
…and we can`t imagine Peterborough would want to loan their striker to fellow strugglers Reading as the race to avoid the dreaded drop heats up.
Even Jim Gannon admitted something might just happen in the near future. The Posh boss added "if he gets frustrated we have to make a decision about whether it`s in his interested, or our interests, to let him go out and play football".
…and let`s face it, it would be a great move for the club in future as 'Clinical as` Craig has a fine eye for goal (if a summer swoop for Helguson proves too expensive).
