Mat Saddles up for Stockport loan

Mat Saddles up for Stockport loan

The forgotten man of Vicarage Road, Mat Sadler (remember him?), has joined League One strugglers Stockport County on loan until the end of the season.

The former Birmingham City left full back cost Watford a whopping 750k in 2008 but soon fell out of favour once Aidy Boothroyd was removed and Brendan Rodgers instated.

A drastic improvement on Jordan Stewart at left back, Sadler immediatly became the Hornet's first choice in the position, and continued at #3 into the 2008/2009 season. However, injury was his downfall and his fall from grace began when Malky was first appointed caretaker as Lloyd Doyley took over on the left.

The twenty-four year-old's last Hornet's appearance came on Boxing Day 2008, where he endured a torrid afternoon in a 4-2 defeat by Bristol City. Since then Sadler has been found featuring for the stiffs more often than not, and has only been included in two matchday squads this term, and that's only down to the new seven subs rule.

In total, Sadler has managed just 30 appearances in the Yellow shirt since his move two years ago. It has been touted that if Sadler were to play for the first team again former club Birmingham would be owed the next slice of his gross transfer fee. There has been no mention of whether Stockport have taken on his entire wage, but with their own financial problems it seems unlikely.

Good luck Mat!

Interesting point i heard the other day, the player the club is contracted to, WFC will continue to pay the wages into Sadlers account and invoice Stockport direct on a monthly payment for an agreed sum.

Fair enough. I can't see many L1 clubs wanting to pay his wages, let alone one in as dire financial straites at they are.

The question is, how much are Stockport being invoiced for his services?

As county are in administration they will be paying very little. Still gets him in shop window. IMO he was not a drastic improvement on Stewart, who was shocking in promotion year- good in Premier season and mixed in final season. Sadler seems to lack confidence once he makes an error and in fact was dropped a fair bit by aidy before Rodgers came in, and MM left him out too.

Agree with everythiu say, apart from him not being an improvement on Stewart! I can't seriously buy the fact anyone could argue against him being a massive improvement on that waste of space, who was yes, very impressive in the P.L.

Rumour is his next Start in Watford shirt will trigger a £250K payment to Birmingham. Doubt County are paying anywhere near his £7K week wages. All we need now is Hoskins, DeMerrit and Eustace off the wage bill at their current levels and we start to move forward. - Excellent news on Taylor joining from Birmingham just what the doctor ordered. - Some of the criticism of Stewart is harsh I’d take him over Sadler, Doyley and Taverner any day of the week. He was Excellent during our promotion season, Held his own in the Prem and IMO suffered from a lack of confidence during the next as did most of the squad. - General feeling is Boothroyd’s treatment of Stewart and Gavin Mahon during that season led him to losing the dressing room and is why we sank like a ship

Yeah I'd heard about us oweing Brum if he played again. Agree about getting Hoskins off the wage bill but I'd like to keep hold of JD and JE for their experience personally. Wouldn't have Stewart over any of the above left-backs though! He improved massively in the Premier League but the promotion season and the following season he was back to his terrible norm.

GT, Aidy dropped Stewart (JDM @ left back) until Carlisles injury got him back in, during promotion season. He was a great athlete but lacked concentration, however in PL he was impressive. Did well for Derby but not at S Utd so far. a very unpredictable player and certainly better than MS but LD (with less ability) is more consistent. I know quite a few Leicester fans and they were always split re JS. Travner? no idea frankly.
