Malky: Watford kids showed maturity

Braveheart Watford boss, Malky Mackay, has heaped praise on his Hornet kids after his "very young side" got the better of an 'experienced` Barnsley side.

In the absence of any new signings after the a number of high profile departures, the Hornets gaffer was forced to field a starting 11 with an average age of only 21 - and 5 players under 20!!!

But Mackay hailed the teenage kicks dished out by the home-grown ability of Dale Bennett, Ross Jenkins and Lee Hodson as something that "really warms the hearts of the coaching staff" after his boys, still wet behind the ears, won 1-0 against a poor Tykes side.

Malky told the official site "Barnsley have experienced, big, physical players they threw at us but we stood up to that...when you look at it we had a very young side but at times they showed real maturity".

In fact, whilst the youthful exuberance of Arsenal`s Henri Lansbury and Manchester United`s Tom Cleverley bossed the Watford midfield, it was the debut of Dale Bennett at the heart of an 'all-action, all Academy' backline that stole the show at Vicarage Road.

Mackay beamed "You look at the back four and they`ve all come through the ranks and the Academy here- that`s a real testatment to the club...'.

And the Hornets gaffer added "I think none of them looked out of place in this league"...

...something that can`t be said to be true of a Barnsley side, who, with the exception of Campbell-Ryce, were one of the worst sides to come to Watford in many a year.

Great team performance, would be nice to get something at Plymouth on Tuesday. Tough ask for the youngsters but you never know.

I think alot of fans were a little worried by that well young lineup but to be fair they where outstanding i thought! Tom Cleverley and Henri Lansbury really worked well for young lads and also Dale Bennet and Lee hodson were solid at the back aswell! Terrific all round performance! Good result against a bit of a bogey team! Fingers crossed we can keep these good performances up at the vic! You 'Orns!

Malky Mackay and the boys deserve alot of credit! considering how much the team has changed in recent weeks, not only 3 points but a clean sheet as well! which is rare for watford, the fact it has been done without jay and williamson! really can not ask for more than that "fantastic".If malky can find a player who can score goals like danny, there no doubt in my mind were definety be o.k in the championship! don cowie been quiet on the goal front so far,was expecting double figures from don. Plymouth we have not beaten since the f.a cup quarter finals in 2007! another team we have struggled against in recen't season's. come on you golden boyz!

Ok it was only Barnsley but to a man (including Ellington when he came on) we were brilliant. We played a nice passing game, building from the back and went long when necessary. You can only beat what's in front of you and if we play the same way against Plymouth we will not go far wrong. Well done lads!!
