6th choice Stoke City striker, Richard Cresswell, has revealed that he turned down a switch to be first choice frontman at Watford on transfer deadline day - deciding he`d rather warm a bench in the big league and hold out for a better offer instead.
Cresswell, who was once Championship hot property (erm, about 25 years ago), told the Stoke Sentinel that he rejected Watford and A N other Championship club who were keen on snapping him up ahead of the transfer window slamming shut insisting "at the moment it wasn`t right for me".
Well that`s interesting Richard, because the VitalWatford inbox has been overrun with Stoke fans laughing their red and white socks off that we`d been linked with you - many suggesting that you were well passed your sell by date.
Cresswell, who reckons Tony Pulis is "happy for me to stay" but still insists he wants showdown talks with the Stoke gaffer(!?!) now would consider a loan move - presumably with one eye on signing up to better terms than Watford would offer for when his contract expires at the end of the season!
Here at VitalWatford Towers, we personally think that Cresswell could do an, admittedly short term, job for Watford - he`s a no nonsense target man with a decent goals to games ratio in the division and bagfuls of experience - something desperately lacking in the Hornet ranks at present.
Still it does appear strange that when Malky Mackay says he`s not after "a journeyman" we keep getting linked with the former Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston and Leicester er, journeyman striker.... and one that doesn`t appear keen on heading south for guaranteed football.
Let`s hope our Braveheart Watford boss sees sense and moves on to other more willing targets rather than get involved in a 'Boothroyd`esque chase for a player who lacks that desire to pull on the yellow shirt.
We don`t want another case of the ol` Collins John`s on our hands now do we?
