Pompey splash £3m on 'great promise'

Portsmouth boss Paul Hart has admitted he`s splashed out a cool £3m on some "great promise which HOPEFULLY he will build upon…" after signing sulky Watford defender Mike Williamson.

Oooo, that`s a large chunk of cash to throw around on the potential of a 24 year old who is not even proven yet at Championship level after only joining from Wycombe some 8 months ago.

The terms of the deal Premier League Pompey have splashed £2m upfront with a further £1m wrapped up in add-ons for 'big time charlie` Williamson who now "has to prove himself as a front line player" according to the Fratton Park gaffer.

The strapping centre back has put pen to paper on 4 years worth of bench warming and reserve team football.

And he`s not even been drafted in to replace the departed Sylvain Distin at the heart of the Portsmouth defence. Oh no, that job that has been handed to Tal Ben Haim, who Hart heralded has been "signed to fill a role".

Ok, so Hart also told the unsure Fratton Park faithful that "he`s a young, hungry centre back, a big lad who`s uncompromising and does the basics first".

Um, Mr Hart - you appear to have omitted Williamson`s other personality traits shown of late - including selfish, arrogant, sulky and unprofessional.

One other question - we heard at around 3pm that Williamson had passed his medical at Fratton Park…. Well that was a quick recovery from the self-diagnosed injury that meant you ruled yourself out of the trip to Swansea, Mike???

There`s not even a 'Good luck at your new club` sign off on the Hornets official site, which tells it`s own story of this fiasco.

M W is not a great loss in my view.. We were gonna go down even before selling him... I don't want that but cant see any other thing happening...

Well the WFC board are certainly very happy as they made no attempt to keep him; quite the opposite in fact - using the "refusing to travel" story as an opportunity to get the fans to call for him to be transferred - very clever that - So this deal represents a great bit of business for the "Hard-Up Hornets"; MW Bought for £150k - sold 7 months later for £2-3 Million (less Wycombe's cut). I will not be popular with my fellow posters but it also confirms the incredible value of the much-maligned Brendan Rodgers; not only did he avoid relegation, we got £500k for him, he probably trebled the price of Priskin and doubled the price of Tommy Smith as a result of us avoiding relagation and them playing well and getting noticed. Am I the only one to recognise this?

lots of chat about attitude which doesn't sound promising but then who knows... what about his playing - does he match up to Hart's description?
