Let's just get the salient facts across.
Two years ago Mike Williamson was on the scrapheap of football. Not even near the top. A cruciate ligament knee injury and without a club. He was saved by Wycombe Wanderers who in turn helped push his career further up the stepladder by selling him to Watford just eight months ago.
Fast forward eight months, or two years if you're still reminiscing in 2007 and the gangly centre half feels his done his stint at Watford and wants out.
Having declared himself 'unfit' to play on Saturday having had his transfer request denied, Malky Mackay has made clear his stance on the last three days.
"As far as I am concerned, if it was me, I would play for the club that pay me and in comparison I look at the Tommy Smith situation.
"Under intense speculation and rumour and a lot of unsettled times, he performed magnificently through pre-season and brought that into his league form.'
Smith of course has been sold to Portsmouth and nobody in a right mind begrudges the Hemel Hempstead-born winger his big move as he conducted himself superbly. However Watford fans will not be happy with the way Williamson has conducted himself, and neither will Malky. The Hornet's 'no minced words, hard as raw Haggis' manager stuck the knife in further:
"I look at him and I think there is the way you handle yourself as a professional footballer, that is how I look at it."
"If somebody is declaring themselves unfit to travel on a Friday morning, other than drag them on the bus, what can I do,"
Malky went onto confirm he is not resigned to losing the big centre back, though it does seem unlikely Williamson will remain after burning his bridges with the club.
