Watford`s highly likeable chairman Jimmy Russo has revealed that right royal shower at Reading have withdrawn from the race to sign Tommy Smith despite being oh so close to land 'Superman` - and it`s just a meagre £200k appearance based add-on that`s the deal breaker.
The Hornets head honcho has indicated that Brendan Who? and the tight fisted Berks at the Madjeski Stadium have informed Watford that they`ve moved on to 'other targets` after a take or leave it bid was er, 'l eft` by the Vicarage Road board.
Speaking through a rather strong statement on the 'fficial sit, lil Jimmy Russo confirmed "I was told on Friday by a Reading representative that Sir John Madejski has withdrawn Reading from the race to sign Tommy...We don`t know why Reading have withdrawn their interest. The asking price was fair..."
Presumably with raised eyebrows, Russo admitted his "surprise" at the right royal stance over a £200k payment based upon appearances, that is "a clause that is commonplace in transfers today" and even suggested that Reading had the cash but just wouldn`t spend it - a statement that should worry all Royals fans.
Then showing the pride and passion you`d expect of Braveheart Watford boss, Malky Mackay, Russo ranted >"We cannot let other clubs take advantage because they feel they can exploit the financial position..."
Aye. You can take our disloyal boss but
you`ll never take our Smudger (on the cheap)!!!
Here at VitalWatford Towers we can`t help but think this isn`t the last we`ll hear from Reading on Smithy and even the Hornets board left the door slightly ajar, hinting "It`s up to the Reading chairman now."
Still, with a final take it or leave it offer refused and now a statement of withdrawal, it would take a major backtrack from Brendan Who? and his team for this to happen - but as we know, Mr Rodgers isn`t afraid to suddenly change his mind when it comes to his principles!
