Watford Bennett link sounds fishy

Here at VitalWatford Towers it`s not often we`d be quick to say 'don`t be so silly` to the some of the finest dog-earred sports hacks in tabloid-land as the rumour mill spins out of control

But The People certainly deserve a spot of mocking after suggesting that Watford were poised to snap up Grimsby Town`s highly rated centre half, Ryan Bennett - who has previously been the subject of big-money bids from Peterborough United!

The 19 year old Mariner`s skipper, who recently signed a 4-yr deal with the League 2 club, has caught the eye of a host of Championship sides including Sheffield United, Blackpool and Scunthorpe so a link to Watford isn`t completely daft.

Even the Grimsby chairman reckons there`s at least 6 Championship clubs having a good long look at the Orsett born defender.

In fairness though, given that Grimsby have already turned down £500K as 'derisory' and are set to refuse a Posh package worth £1m, Watford are unlikely to be able to compete given the empty club coffers.

Bennett is also on record as saying that 'at no point' did he want to leave Blundell Park….

Still, stranger things has happened….

We reckon there`s more chance Bennett`s teammate, Matthew Bird (also linked in the People) is a more realistic target but we`ll just have to wait and see if Malky can pull a rabbit out of a hat to fill our empty Number 5 shirt!!!
