Hornets fuming at tapped up Tommy

The Watford board`s relentless verbal battle with Reading has continued this evening after chairman Jimmy Russo hinted that the right royal shambles at the Madjeski have been tapping up Tommy Smith.

Earlier in the day, Brendan Who? told the Berkshire sports hacks that Smudger "wants to be [at Reading]" and that Smith "has turned down a number of moves"… Rodgers might not have an ounce of integrity or a scrap of loyalty but boy, has, he got some front.

And it`s that front that got right up the nose of the Watford board who have issued a hard hitting statement, with the Hornets head honcho questioning "as to how Brendan knows Tommy`s future intentions"!!!

Russo says he is "disturbed and disappointed" by the actions of the "very disrespectful" Reading gaffer and confirmed that no-one from the Madjeski has received permission to speak with Smith…

Though Russo isn`t saying that Smith ain`t for sale mind you. He added "Unless we receive the appropriate valuation for Tommy, through the correct channels, then we intend to keep the player at the club, this I can guarantee 100 per cent".

So Reading know that if they want Smithy they will have to fork out an extra £1.1m on top of their "derisory" "750k initial joke of a bid to get him.

A case of shut up and shows us the colour of your money or a clear case of tapping up then for the FA to investigate…? Here at VitalWatford, we`ll let you decide!

What does Tommy want in all this? He knows that we'd sell him for £1.8M but is settled in the area and doesn't want to move north. He's at the top of his form right now and needs to get a good long term contract to provide security for his family, which apparently we cannot offer right now . Must be very unsettling for him.....

Don't feel to sorry for Smithy, He has had the chance of securing a long term contract with other clubs, but he wants to go to Reading, who don't wanna pay the fee, so he waits a year and walks for free. Personally i don't give a fu!! about his family, i am more concerned with what happens with our club, and to be fair RFB, why do you care? He is still being paid by our club, so he should just get on with it. I think a deal will be done but as long as the club don't lose out, good bye. The players dont really give a ***** about us fans.

He's a decent bloke and would stay if we could offer him the contract and security he needs. He deserves some respect whatever the outcome.

I don't know him and yes he is in the top 10 of all time greats that have played for WFC. Do you not recall him walking out on the club for nothing the last time around? what respect did he show us, what loyalty? he is a good player, but my point is, most players are in it for themselves and very few give a toss about our club or fans. If he goes to reading good luck to him, but i want the club to get the best price for him. not what the player wants, he signed a contract.

Yes I have been supporting the Hornets - man & boy - since 1963 and do remember that Tommy walked away to try and better himself at the end of his contract last time around. Nothing wrong in that in my view as he wanted to make the most of his abilities; he then returned to the Vic as a better more rounded player, and has given us great value over the past couple of seasons. If Reading or another Southern-based club do not come up with the goods I'm sure he will continue to give of his best for WFC. He's a local lad and is certainly not looking to break his contract like Marlon - now there's a decent player but not so deecnt human being! Come on You Golden Boys!

Interesting that you state the TS left the club to better himself and yet left himself open to abuse from no end of wfc fans, this time you state he wants security.... A lot of investment through time, coaching, wages was spent on TS and when he left, the club got nothing, all i am saying now, is the player is under contract for a year and yet Rodgers is saying that TS wants to go to reading! nothing official from the player i grant you, but why should reading get a player that is clearly worth 1.8 million for £750K? if he wants to go there, then let them cough up the extra, if not he stays and walks for free in a year, if it is security i am sure that Sheff utd were willing to pay what he wanted, after all Henderson got more money going there.

If we could offer Tommy a new contract paying him what he's worth, he'd stay. The problem is we don't appear able to do it.

If Ashley Young is sold to Man Utd, i am sure we have a sell on clause, which could raise a couple of million for the club. Maybe that could change things for wfc

Not sure about that and based on our past performance in these matters...wouldn't hold my breath. Nice thought though Andy
